The ayanamsa is the angle between the tropical zodiac, measured from the equinox, and the sidereal zodiac, measured from a fixed point among the stars. It is currently about twenty-four degrees and grows by roughly fifty seconds of arc a year.
Where it comes from
The earth’s axis is tilted, and it wobbles like a spinning top, tracing a full circle in about 25,800 years. This is precession. As the axis moves, the points where the sun crosses the celestial equator, the equinoxes, slide westward against the background stars.
A tropical position is measured from the moving equinox, so it tracks the seasons perfectly and drifts against the stars. A sidereal position is measured from a fixed stellar reference, so it tracks the stars and drifts against the seasons. Indian astronomy chose the sidereal frame, which is why every longitude in a panchanga is nirayana, sidereal, and why the ayanamsa has to be subtracted from a longitude an observatory would publish.
Why the value is disputed
The awkward part is deciding where the fixed point should be. There is no mark in the sky saying zero. Several definitions exist, and they differ by up to a degree, enough to shift a nakshatra boundary by two hours and, occasionally, a festival by a day.
The most widely used is the Lahiri or Chitrapaksha ayanamsa, which places the starting point opposite the star Chitra, Spica. It was adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee in 1955 and is the basis of the Indian national calendar and of most published almanacs, Anudina included.
Others in use include Raman, about a fifth of a degree less; Krishnamurti, used by the KP system; and Fagan and Bradley, favoured by Western sidereal astrologers. The differences are small but real, and they are one reason two almanacs can disagree about a boundary time without either having made a mistake.
Where it does and does not matter
The ayanamsa affects everything measured from the fixed point: nakshatra, yoga, rashi, sankranti dates and therefore Makara Sankranti.
It does not affect the tithi or the karana at all. Those depend on the angle between the moon and the sun, and subtracting the same quantity from both longitudes leaves the difference untouched. This is worth knowing: a disagreement between almanacs about Ekadashi cannot be blamed on the ayanamsa, whereas a disagreement about Makara Sankranti usually can.
The Surya Siddhanta reckoning sidesteps the question entirely. Its longitudes are sidereal by construction, counted from the fixed initial point of its own system, so no ayanamsa is applied at all.
