Chaturmasya means the four months. It is the rainy season observance: a period of restraint in food, in travel and in undertakings, opening in the bright fortnight of Ashadha and closing in the bright fortnight of Kartika. For a sanyasi it is binding. He stops wandering and stays in one place for the whole period, which is why a math announces where its head will be seated and why the season is the one time of year a visitor can be certain of finding him.
Two starting points, and why
This is the observance on which the two reckonings part company most visibly, and the disagreement is not about astronomy at all. It is about which day the tradition names.
The Vaishnava tradition begins Chaturmasya at Devshayani Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi of the bright fortnight of Ashadha, on the understanding that Vishnu enters his yoga nidra on that day and rises again at Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartika. The Smarta tradition the Sringeri Math follows begins it at Vyasa Purnima, the full moon of the same fortnight, four days later, because the sanyasi’s rains retreat is opened with the worship of Vyasa.
Anudina honours both rather than choosing. Under the drik reckoning it marks the ekadashi; under the Surya Siddhanta reckoning, which is what the Sringeri panchangam is computed on, it marks the purnima. If the date shown here is not the one you expect, check which reckoning the app is set to. See Drik and Surya Siddhanta for what that switch does.
The day is taken by the tithi running at sunrise in both cases.
What is given up
The four months are kept as four parts, each with its own restriction, taken in order:
- Shaka vrata: leafy greens are set aside.
- Dadhi vrata: curd is set aside.
- Ksheera vrata: milk is set aside.
- Dvidala vrata: pulses, the two-lobed grains, are set aside.
In the full observance each of the four runs for a lunar month. Many households keep a shortened form in which each runs for a fortnight, so all four are completed in half the time. Whichever is kept, the item given up is returned at the end of its period with a formal offering, and what is set aside is customarily given away rather than simply avoided.
What else stops
Weddings, upanayana, house entry and other beginnings are not performed during Chaturmasya. This is a substantial part of why the marriage season in Karnataka empties out between Ashadha and Kartika and fills again after the Kartika ekadashi, which is called Utthana or Prabodhini Ekadashi and is treated as the reopening of the auspicious calendar.
Two things readers conflate
Chaturmasya is not a fast. Restraint in food is one of its parts, but the observance is about staying put, studying and giving, and a householder who keeps it is not expected to go hungry.
The Jain Chaturmas, kept over the same months for the same reason, is a separate observance with its own rules, and the Buddhist vassa is a third. That three traditions withdraw for the same rains is not a coincidence: travel in the monsoon damages crops and small life on the road, and all three say so.
