Dhanurmasa is the month in which the sun stands in Dhanus, the ninth rashi. It begins on the day of Dhanu Sankranti, in the middle of December, and runs for about thirty days until the sun moves into Makara. Through the whole of it the principal worship of the day is moved to the hour before sunrise. Tamil Nadu calls the same month Margazhi, and it is the month of the Tiruppavai.
When it begins, and why it does not move
Most observances in this calendar are fixed to a tithi. Dhanurmasa is not. It is a solar month, fixed by the sun’s entry into a sign, so it falls on the same Gregorian dates year after year, the 15th or 16th of December, give or take a day. The sankranti page explains why solar dates keep step with the Gregorian calendar while lunar ones wander.
Two things can still move the first day by one. The instant of entry depends on the ayanamsa in use, and almanacs using different values can place it a few hours apart. And when the sankranti falls late in the day or at night, the day that counts is decided by the rule for its punya kala, and some almanacs, and Kerala’s own solar calendar, apply that rule differently. Anudina begins Dhanurmasa on the day it shows Dhanu Sankranti, and prints the instant so the choice can be seen.
Why before dawn
The reason usually given is that a human year is a single day of the devas. Their day is uttarayana, the sun’s northward half, which the tradition begins at Makara Sankranti; their night is dakshinayana. Dhanurmasa is the last month before Makara, and so it is the devas’ last watch before dawn, their brahma muhurta. Worship offered at that hour of their day is held to be worth far more than at any other, and the household matches it by worshipping at the same hour of its own.
How the month is kept
The puja is done before sunrise, often while it is still dark, and in many houses the woman of the house draws a larger rangoli at the door each morning. The naivedya is the dish Karnataka calls huggi and Tamil Nadu calls pongal: rice cooked with green gram, either with pepper, cumin and ghee or sweet with jaggery. In the Madhva tradition it is mudganna, and the Dhanurmasa puja at the Udupi Krishna Matha and in Madhva homes is done in the dark with this offering.
In Sri Vaishnava homes and temples the thirty verses of Andal’s Tiruppavai are sung, one for each day of the month, and Shaiva temples in the Tamil country recite Manikkavachakar’s Tiruvempavai. The bright ekadashi that falls in the month is Vaikuntha Ekadashi, the greatest day in the Vaishnava year, which the Tamil reckoning defines by this very month.
What is set aside
In the South, Dhanurmasa is a shunya masa, an empty month for beginnings: marriages, upanayanas and house entries are not fixed in it. North Indian almanacs reach much the same result by another name, calling the sun’s months in Dhanus and Meena kharmas. The reasoning is the same as for the fortnight of the ancestors: the month is not unlucky, it is spoken for. Its attention belongs to worship, and the calendar for beginnings opens again when the sun enters Makara.
