Gulika Kala, also called Gulika Kalam or Kuligai, is the third of the three inauspicious eighths of the daylight, alongside Rahu Kala and Yamaganda.
Divide sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts. Gulika is the seventh part on Sunday, the sixth on Monday, the fifth on Tuesday, the fourth on Wednesday, the third on Thursday, the second on Friday and the first on Saturday.
The pattern is easy to remember: Saturday takes the first part and each earlier day of the week takes one part later, so the sequence walks backwards through the week.
Gulika and Mandi
Gulika is treated as a son or an aspect of Saturn, and is one of the upagrahas, the shadow points that are calculated rather than observed. In horoscopy the ascendant rising at the start of the Gulika period is itself plotted as a point in the chart, where it is called Gulika or Mandi, and is read for matters of obstruction, delay and, in some schools, for questions about death and inheritance.
This gives Gulika a role the other two do not have. Rahu Kala and Yamaganda are periods to avoid; Gulika is also a position in a chart.
Where it matters most
Gulika Kala is watched most closely in Kerala and in Tamil Nadu, where it carries weight comparable to Rahu Kala. In Karnataka and further north it is printed in almanacs but consulted less.
The traditional caution is against beginning anything intended to last: a construction, a partnership, a course of treatment, a journey from which one expects to return. As with the other periods, work already in progress is not interrupted.
Some traditions also count a night Gulika, found by dividing the night from sunset to sunrise into eight parts and applying a parallel table. Anudina prints the daytime period, which is the one almanacs normally give.
