A hora is one twelfth of the daylight or one twelfth of the night, so twenty-four in all. Each is ruled by one of the seven classical planets, and the ruler changes from hour to hour in a fixed order.
The order is the Chaldean one, the planets ranked by apparent speed from slowest to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of the weekday, and each successive hora takes the next planet in that cycle.
Where the week comes from
This system is why the days of the week are in the order they are. Twenty-four hours stepped through a cycle of seven lands three places on, and three places on from the sun is the moon, from the moon is Mars, from Mars is Mercury, and so round to Saturn and back to the sun. That is exactly Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
The same reasoning produced the same week order in Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome and India, which is why Sunday is the sun’s day in Kannada, Latin, English and Japanese alike. The hora is older than the week it generated.
What each hour is used for
- Surya: authority, government, dealings with officials. Mixed generally.
- Chandra: travel, water, matters of the home, anything requiring gentleness. Favourable.
- Mangala: contention, surgery, matters requiring force. Unfavourable for most beginnings.
- Budha: study, writing, accounts, negotiation, communication. Favourable.
- Guru: the most favourable. Education, ceremonies, medicine, anything of lasting importance.
- Shukra: marriage, the arts, purchases, pleasure. Favourable.
- Shani: labour, iron, land, and things intended to endure. Generally avoided for beginnings.
The hours are not sixty minutes
Because a hora is a twelfth of the daylight rather than a twelfth of a day, day horas and night horas have different lengths except at the equinoxes. In Udupi in June a day hora runs about sixty-four minutes and a night hora about fifty-six. This is the same unequal-hour system the Romans used, and the word hora is the ancestor of “hour” in English.
