Magha Purnima, or Maghi Purnima, is the full moon that closes Magha. Its whole character comes from the month it ends: Magha is the bathing month, and the purnima is the last and largest of its baths.
When it falls and why
It is Purnima, the fifteenth tithi of the bright fortnight of Magha, and the day that carries it is the day on which Purnima is running at sunrise.
The sunrise rule is not arbitrary here. The bath is taken before or at dawn, so the day on which the tithi is present at sunrise is the day on which the bath can be taken under the tithi. Where an almanac disagrees by a day it has usually taken the moment of exact full moon instead, which can fall at any hour of the day or night.
The Magha bath
Magha snana is a month long observance. From the full moon of Pausha to the full moon of Magha, the observer bathes before sunrise in cold water, ideally in a river, and keeps a simple regime alongside it: one meal, restraint in speech, japa, and dana of sesame, warm clothing and food. The month is the coldest of the year over most of the country, and the difficulty is the point of it.
At Prayagraj the same month is the Magha Mela, and those who camp on the sands for the whole of it are the kalpavasis. Magha Purnima is one of its principal bathing days and the day on which the kalpavasa ends, the tents are struck and the camp disperses.
Karnataka practice
Karnataka has no bathing mela on that scale, and the observance here is quieter and more domestic. The pre dawn cold bath through Magha is kept in many households without any journey at all, in the well or the bathroom, which the tradition accepts when a river is not at hand. Those who can go bathe in the Tunga at Sringeri, the Kaveri at Srirangapatna and Talakadu, the Krishna and the Bhima in the north of the state, and the temple tanks elsewhere.
The full moon itself carries the usual purnima observances: Satyanarayana puja in many households, a temple visit, and dana. It also falls in the season when village jatres begin across the state, and a number of them are fixed to this full moon.
What is easily confused
The larger bathing day of the Magha month is not this one. It is Mauni Amavasya, the new moon a fortnight earlier, which at Prayagraj draws the heaviest crowd of the mela and in a Kumbha year is the chief shahi snana. Magha Purnima closes the month; Mauni Amavasya is its peak.
Magha Purnima is also not Maha Shivaratri, though both are described as falling in Magha. Shivaratri is the fourteenth of the dark fortnight, at the other end of the month in the amanta reckoning used in Karnataka, and the purnimanta almanacs of the north file it under Phalguna. The tithi is the same everywhere; only the month name differs.
