Varalakshmi Vrata is the worship of Lakshmi as the giver of boons, kept by married women in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. It is one of the largest household observances of the year in Karnataka.
Why it is always a Friday
Almost every observance in this calendar is fixed to a tithi, and the weekday it falls on changes from year to year. This one is the exception. Varalakshmi Vrata is fixed to no tithi at all. The rule is the Friday preceding the full moon of Shravana, and a weekday rule can only ever produce that weekday.
Friday is Shukravara, the day of Shukra, and it is the weekday associated with Lakshmi, so the anchor is the point rather than an accident. The purnima enters the rule only to say which Friday of the month is meant: the last one before the full moon, which in practice is the second Friday of the bright fortnight in most years.
One useful consequence: because the rule is a weekday, the drik and Surya Siddhanta reckonings almost always agree on the date. They can differ only in the rare case where they place the full moon itself on opposite sides of a Friday. Most observances disagree far more often than this one does. See Drik and Surya Siddhanta.
What is done
A kalasha is made: a pot filled with rice or water, a coconut on top, mango leaves at the rim, and over it a metal face of Lakshmi. The whole is then dressed as the goddess, in a saree, with ornaments, flowers and a nose ring, and set on a bed of rice on a decorated platform. The making of the kalasha the previous evening is half the observance and is done with some care.
The puja is performed in the morning after a bath, with the house cleaned and a rangoli at the door. Nine threads are twisted together and nine knots tied in them, and this dora is worshipped and then tied on the right wrist. Married women of the neighbourhood are invited, given tambula of betel leaf, areca nut, turmeric, kumkuma, a blouse piece and a coconut, and the offering is shared.
The food is festival food: holige or obbattu, payasa, chitranna, kosambari, and a full meal served at midday. The vrata katha, the account of Charumati of Kundinapura to whom the goddess appeared in a dream, is read before the offering. The story is framed as Shiva telling it to Parvati.
Regional variation
The Karnataka and Andhra forms are close. In Tamil Nadu the kalasha is often smaller and the emphasis falls on the lamp; the day is otherwise the same. In North India the vrata is not generally kept, and Lakshmi is worshipped instead at Deepavali.
Two clarifications
Varalakshmi Vrata is not the same as the Mahalakshmi Vrata of Bhadrapada, which runs for sixteen days and has its own rule. Nor is it a fast in the ordinary sense: the observance is a puja and a meal, and those who keep a fast keep it only until the puja is finished.
