In the Ardhanarishvara form the left half of the body is Parvati and the right half is Shiva. Each line of this hymn first describes the goddess’s half and then Shiva’s half. So two very different pictures stand side by side in a single body.
Every verse ends “namaḥ Śivāyai ca namaḥ Śivāya”, salutation to Shivaa and to Shiva. Below we give the meaning of the eight verses and the verse of benefits, rendering each pair as a contrast between her and him.

About this hymn
The colophon of the stotranidhi.com text calls it a work of Sri Shankaracharya. This is a traditional ascription. As with many hymns that carry Shankara’s name, its authorship cannot be stated with certainty.
In each line the first epithet is a feminine dative (to her) and the second a masculine dative (to him). So every pair is a contrast: musk and kumkum against the ash of the pyre, gold ornaments against serpents, the lasya dance against the tandava. “Śivāyai” and “Śivāya” in the refrain are two forms of one name. In the eighth verse the hymn joins the pairs, calling each of them united with the other.
The eight verses and the verse of benefits are all in the Upajati metre. We follow the stotranidhi.com text, and other editions may differ in a few words. In the fourth verse “samekṣaṇā” is read both as she of the even (two) eyes and as she who looks on all alike.
For another hymn that salutes Shiva and Parvati together, see our page on the Umamaheshwara Stotram.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
When a couple share the work of one kitchen, one chops the vegetables while the other tempers the spices. Their hands are different, and so are their pace and taste. Yet the meal is one.
This hymn sets two different forms side by side in every line and never tries to make one resemble the other. The picture reminds us that people who share a life can keep their differences and still be one.
