For one who does not take them in, the objects turn away, but the relish lingers. On seeing the Supreme, even that relish falls away.
Context and commentary on verse 2.59
The word rasa carries two senses, and the acharyas use both. Shankaracharya makes clear that rasa here means raga, the fine inward liking, and cites the words rasika and rasajna as support.
Sridhara Swami offers both readings. One: nirahara means one who does not take in objects through the senses. Two: nirahara means one who is fasting, and then rasavarjam means that the wish for taste alone does not go.
Madhvacharya supports this second reading with a line of the Bhagavata: the wise, by fasting, quickly conquer the senses, except the tongue, which only grows stronger in the presence of taste.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

Forced avoidance changes behaviour, not longing. With no sweets in the house we do not eat them, but the wanting does not stop.
That is why plans built on restriction alone do not last. For a change to hold, some other contentment has to fill the place. In matters of food, harsh restriction does no good, and it is worth taking a doctor’s advice about it.
