Context and commentary on verse 3.17
Three words come one upon another, and Madhva separates them finely. Ramana is the happiness that comes of seeing the Supreme, tripti is the judgement that everything else is enough as it is, and santosha is the happiness that produces that judgement.
For Shankara this man is the Sankhya, the renunciate settled in knowledge of the self, satisfied by the self and not by food and drink. Sridhara Swami states it plainly: having taught karma yoga for the purification of the ignorant man’s mind, the text now says in two verses that the knower has no need of action.
For Ramanuja this is the man who needs neither the yoga of knowledge nor the yoga of action as a means, because the nature of the self is always in view for him.
Madhva draws a tight boundary here. From the emphatic ‘delights in the self alone’ he reads that only the one settled in the deepest, objectless samadhi has no duty. Even a person of steady wisdom, he says, is seen to have duties connected with the body, and he cites the Pancharatra line that one’s own duty exists for the Lord’s satisfaction.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Notice the word ‘alone’, three times over. In the self alone, by the self alone, in the self alone. This is a very high state, and the Gita is not calling it easy.
Quoting this verse to get out of work is therefore both easy and dangerous. The exemption belongs only to someone who wants happiness from nothing else at all. If one small wish is left, the work is left too.
