Context and commentary on verse 3.18
This is the reason behind the previous verse. Shankara touches both sides: no purpose is served for him by action done, and no fault of omission attaches to action left undone. From Brahma down to a motionless plant, there is no being he must lean on to accomplish anything.
At the end of the same comment Shankara says something directly to Arjuna, and it puts these two verses in their proper place: ‘You are not standing in this complete seeing, which is like water standing everywhere.’ The exemption exists, but it is not yours.
Sridhara Swami raises an objection and answers it. Since a shruti says that men coming to the knowledge of Brahman is not dear to the gods, should one not serve the gods to avert their obstruction? His answer is another shruti: the gods have no power to harm him, for he is their very self.
Madhva applies it to the daily obligatory rites and says that for such a man there is no fault in leaving them. But he too makes clear that this is not Arjuna’s condition.

For life today
A person who wants nothing from anyone looks rarer the longer you think about it. In most of our relationships some small expectation is hidden somewhere: if not money then respect, if not respect then agreement.
Shankara’s one line is worth a great deal here. It is easy to read a description of a high state and quietly assume it is one’s own. Having a teacher who says ‘you are not there’ is a piece of good fortune.
