Those deluded by the qualities of nature cling to the works of the qualities. The one who knows the whole should not unsettle those dull ones who know only a part.
Context and commentary on verse 3.29
Sridhara Swami marks that what was said in verse twenty-six is repeated here and brought to a close.
Shankara unpacks ‘those who know only a part’ as those who see nothing but the fruit of the work. He also makes clear that unsettling them means exactly the creating of a split in their understanding.
Ramanuja adds a fine point here that ties straight into the chapter’s argument. Unsettling is done not only by speech but by where one stands. If the dull, who follow the great, see the great man risen out of karma yoga and settled in the yoga of knowledge, their own minds will slide off karma yoga. So the great man should himself stay in karma yoga.
Madhva argues over the meaning of the word. Attachment to objects arises precisely because of the conceit one has about the senses, so guna here is the senses. He cites the etymologists to show that the word guna is used for the senses, for sattva and the rest, and for whatever is subordinate.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

Having the power to damage someone’s belief is not by itself a reason to use it. If a person’s work is being held up by the ladder they are standing on, look for another ladder before pulling that one away.
Ramanuja’s fine point is especially valuable here. Where we stand unsettles people more than what we say.
