Context and commentary on verse 3.31
Sridhara Swami gives anasuyantah a concrete picture: not looking for fault by thinking ‘he is pushing me into work that is nothing but suffering’. Shankara calls it not casting blame on Vasudeva, the supreme teacher.
Ramanuja’s reading here is remarkably generous. He sees three groups: those who settle on this teaching and practise it, those who do not practise it but have trust in it, and those who have no trust yet do not cavil by saying ‘such a teaching cannot be’. All three, he says, are freed. The second and third, their wrongdoing worn away by trust and by the absence of cavilling, soon come to practise this same teaching and are released.
Madhva reads this verse with the next and presses that the release comes through knowledge. No other means carries anyone to liberation without passing through knowledge: that is his rule.

For life today
Notice that trust and the absence of fault-finding come together here. Even when one cannot accept the advice, not suspecting the motive of the person who gave it is the second quality being named.
In treatment this makes a large difference. Asking questions and being suspicious are not the same thing. The people who ask questions move forward. The people who look for a bad motive behind everything stay where they are.
