Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma is the best loved of Purandara Dasa’s songs. In homes across Karnataka it is sung at the Friday puja and at the Varamahalakshmi vrata. Here Lakshmi is called not as a distant goddess but as a mother, or a daughter of the house, walking in with the chime of her anklets.
The song has a pallavi and five charanas. Its language has the flavour of older Kannada but is simple. Since a few words are no longer in common use, we explain them in present-day Kannada in the meaning of each stanza.

About this hymn
Purandara Dasa (about 1484 to 1564) is a central figure of the Haridasa tradition, and tradition honours him as the father of Carnatic music. His signature name, Purandara Vitthala, appears in the last charana of this song.
The images come from the life of the home: the chime of anklets, butter rising in buttermilk, a bangled hand, the Friday puja. Lakshmi is called as Sita, as the queen of Venkataramana and as the queen of the Ranga of Alagiri. Alagiri is usually taken to be the hill of Alagar Koil near Madurai.
It is most often sung in Madhyamavati raga and Adi tala, though some sources give Shri raga. Since Madhyamavati is the traditional auspicious closing raga, the song is often sung at the end of concerts.
On the text: our source lengthens vowels for singing (bhagyadaa, baaramma, kaalgalaa). We print the usual written forms (bhagyada, baramma, sankhyeyillada, sakkare, akkare, venkata, vithala). In the first charana we follow the common reading hejjeya melondu hejjeyanikkuta, with toruta, while other editions have hejjeye mele hejjeya nikkuta and maduta. In the third charana we print attittagalade, where our source spells the word with the retroflex la (ಳ).
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
In many homes a lamp is lit at the threshold in the evening and the door is left open. Behind the custom is a mind that waits. This song, too, calls Lakshmi with affection more than it begs of her. Many feel that keeping the home and the heart ready is the first step in welcoming what is good.
