ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ಅರ್ಪಣೆ ಎಂದು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಿಲ್ವಾಷ್ಟಕಂ ಈ ಅರ್ಪಣೆಯ ಮಹಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಎಂಟು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಗಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕವೂ “ಏಕಬಿಲ್ವಂ ಶಿವಾರ್ಪಣಮ್”, ಅಂದರೆ “ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಣೆ” ಎಂಬ ಪಲ್ಲವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
Tradition holds the bilva leaf to be the offering dearest to Shiva. The Bilvashtakam praises this offering in eight verses. Each verse ends with the refrain “ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam”, “one bilva leaf, offered to Shiva”.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ
- 1 ಮೂರು ದಳಗಳುಳ್ಳ, ಮೂರು ಗುಣಗಳ ಆಕಾರದಂತಿರುವ, ಶಿವನ ಮೂರು ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೂರು ಮೊನೆಗಳ ತ್ರಿಶೂಲದಂತೆ ಇರುವ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆ. ಮೂರು ಜನ್ಮಗಳ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುವ ಈ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವವನ್ನು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
The bilva leaf with three leaflets, shaped like the three gunas, like Shiva’s three eyes and his three-pronged trident. This one bilva, which destroys the sins of three lifetimes, I offer to Shiva. - 2 ಮೂರು ಎಲೆಗಳ ಕವಲುಳ್ಳ, ತೂತಿಲ್ಲದ, ಕೋಮಲವಾದ, ಶುಭವಾದ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಗಳಿಂದ ನಾನು ಶಿವಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಈ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವವನ್ನು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
With bilva leaves of three leaflets, whole and without holes, tender and auspicious, I shall worship Shiva. This one bilva I offer to Shiva. - 3 ನಂದಿಕೇಶ್ವರನಾದ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಹರಿಯದ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದಾಗ ಜನರು ಎಲ್ಲ ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ಶುದ್ಧರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವವನ್ನು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
When Nandikeshvara, Shiva the lord of Nandi, is worshipped with an unbroken bilva leaf, people are cleansed of all their sins. This one bilva I offer to Shiva. - 4 ಒಂದು ಸಾಲಗ್ರಾಮ ಶಿಲೆಯನ್ನು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನಿಗೆ ದಾನಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಸೋಮಯಾಗದಷ್ಟು ಮಹಾಪುಣ್ಯ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಪುಣ್ಯಕರ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಭಾವ.
If someone gives even a single saligrama stone to a brahmin, he gains merit as great as that of a Soma sacrifice. The sense is that one bilva offered to Shiva brings that same merit. - 5 ಸಾವಿರ ಕೋಟಿ ಆನೆಗಳ ದಾನ, ನೂರು ವಾಜಪೇಯ ಯಾಗಗಳು, ಕೋಟಿ ಕನ್ಯೆಯರ ವಿವಾಹದ ಮಹಾದಾನ, ಇವೆಲ್ಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮನಾದುದು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುವ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವ.
The gift of thousands of millions of elephants, a hundred Vajapeya sacrifices, the great gift of ten million brides in marriage: one bilva offered to Shiva is equal to all of these. - 6 ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯ ಬೆವರಿನಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ, ಮಹಾದೇವನಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ಬಿಲ್ವವೃಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಈ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವವನ್ನು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.
I bow to the bilva tree, born from the sweat of Parvati and dear to Mahadeva. This one bilva I offer to Shiva. - 7 ಬಿಲ್ವವೃಕ್ಷದ ದರ್ಶನ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಅತಿ ಘೋರವಾದ ಪಾಪವನ್ನೂ ಕಳೆಯುವ ಈ ಒಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವವನ್ನು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ (ಅಘೋರ ಎಂಬುದು ಶಿವನ ಒಂದು ರೂಪದ ಹೆಸರೂ ಹೌದು).
The sight of the bilva tree and its touch destroy sin. Whoever recites this sacred Bilvashtaka in the presence of Shiva is freed from all sins and reaches the world of Shiva.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn
ಬಿಲ್ವಾಷ್ಟಕದ ಕರ್ತೃ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಲ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೊಂದು ಪೂಜಾಪರಂಪರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ. ಬಿಲ್ವವೃಕ್ಷ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯ ಬೆವರಿನ ಹನಿಗಳಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿತು ಎಂಬ ಕಥೆ ಸ್ಕಂದಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಪರಂಪರೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಆರನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
The author and date of the Bilvashtakam are unknown. It is a hymn that grew within the tradition of worship. Tradition places the story of the bilva tree springing from drops of Parvati’s sweat in the Skanda Purana, and the sixth verse alludes to it.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಹಲವು ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳು ಪ್ರಚಲಿತದಲ್ಲಿವೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಉದ್ದವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ. ನಾವು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಳಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಎಂಟು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಮತ್ತು ಒಂದು ಫಲಶ್ರುತಿಯ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಇದು stotranidhi ಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮೊದಲ ಪಾಠ.
Several versions of this hymn are current. Some are longer and contain different verses. We give the commonly used version of eight verses and a closing phalashruti, which is the first version printed on stotranidhi.
ಎಲ್ಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳೂ ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿವೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಮೂರು ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ, ನಂತರದ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಅದರ ಅರ್ಪಣೆಯನ್ನು ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದಾನ ಯಾಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೊನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳು ಬಿಲ್ವವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ವಿಷ್ಣು, ಶಿವರ ರೂಪವೆಂದು ನಮಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಸಂಕೇತವಾದ ಸಾಲಗ್ರಾಮ ಬರುವುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ.
All the verses are in anushtubh metre. The first three describe the bilva leaf itself, and the verses that follow compare its offering with great gifts and sacrifices. The last verses honour the bilva tree as the form of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is worth noticing that the fourth verse speaks of the saligrama, a sacred emblem of Vishnu.
ಐದನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಆಧಾರ ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ “ಮಹಾದಾನಾಂ” ಎಂದಿದೆ. ವ್ಯಾಕರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದುವ “ಮಹಾದಾನಂ” ಎಂಬ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
In the fifth verse our source reads “mahādānāṃ”. We give the grammatically regular form “mahādānaṃ”.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಕೇಳುವುದು ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಎಲೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಹರಿಯದ, ಕೋಮಲವಾದ, ಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ಎಲೆಯಾಗಿರಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಿಂತ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯ ಬೆಲೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
The hymn asks for a single leaf, but a leaf that is whole, tender and unbroken. The thought here is that a small gift given wholeheartedly weighs more than a large one.
ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಕಾರಿಡಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಯಾರಿಗೋ ಒಂದು ಲೋಟ ಚಹಾ, ಒಂದು ಕುರ್ಚಿ, ಎರಡು ನಿಮಿಷದ ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುವುದು ಕೂಡ ಇಂಥದೇ ಒಂದು ಎಲೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಗಮನವಿಟ್ಟು, ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಸಾಕು.
Offering a cup of tea, a chair or two minutes of conversation to someone waiting in a hospital corridor is a leaf of the same kind. It is enough to give it attentively and whole.
