The child Krishna broke a pot of butter and ran, and Yashoda caught him and tied him to a mortar with a rope. He who had a rope (dama) round his belly (udara) is Damodara. These eight verses bring that scene before our eyes and pray that this child form may live in the mind.
The month of Kartika is also called Damodara month. Gaudiya Vaishnavas sing this ashtaka every evening of that month while offering lamps, and through ISKCON the custom has spread to many parts of the world.

I bow to the Lord whose form is being, awareness and bliss, with gleaming earrings, shining in Gokula. Afraid of Yashoda, he jumped down from the mortar and ran, and the gopi, running after him at great speed, caught him from behind.
He is crying, rubbing his eyes again and again with his two lotus hands, his eyes full of fear. On his throat, marked with three lines and trembling with sobs, a necklace hangs. I bow to that Damodara, tied by a rope round his belly, bound by his mother’s devotion.
By such childhood play he plunges his own cowherd village into a pool of joy. To those who know his lordship he declares that he is won over by his devotees. To that Lord I bow with love, again and again, a hundred times.
O Lord, even from you, the best of all who grant boons, I ask here neither liberation, nor Vaikuntha, the farthest reach of liberation, nor any other boon. O Master, may this form of yours as the little cowherd boy always appear in my mind. What need have I of anything else?
May this lotus face of yours appear in my mind: framed by very dark, glossy, reddish curls, kissed again and again by the gopi Yashoda, with lips red as the bimba fruit. I want none of a hundred thousand other gains.
Salutations to you, O Lord, Damodara, Ananta, Vishnu. Be gracious, O Master. I am sunk in an ocean that is a net of sorrows, wretched and ignorant: shower me with the rain of your merciful glance and take me in. O Lord, become visible to my eyes.
Just as, while still tied up, you freed the two sons of Kubera and made them your devotees, so give me loving devotion to you. O Damodara, I have no craving for liberation. Nalakuvara and Manigriva, turned into two arjuna trees by Narada’s curse, were freed when Krishna dragged the mortar between them and toppled the trees.
Salutations to your rope, abode of shining radiance, and to your belly, the abode of the whole universe. Salutations to Radhika, your beloved. Salutations to you, the Lord of endless play.
About this hymn
The colophon places this ashtaka in the Padma Purana. Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition says the sage Satyavrata sang it in a conversation with Narada and Shaunaka. Sanatana Gosvami wrote a commentary on it called Dig-darshini. The custom of singing it with lamps on the evenings of Kartika comes from that tradition.
The story is in the Bhagavata, tenth book, chapters 9 and 10. The child Krishna breaks the butter pot and runs from Yashoda, who catches him and ties him to a mortar with a rope. He drags the mortar off, wedges it between two arjuna trees and topples them, and Kubera’s sons, who had been those trees, are set free (verse 7). The metre is bhujangaprayata.
Devotees call verse 4 the heart of the ashtaka: neither liberation nor Vaikuntha, only the form of the cowherd child in the mind. Verse 8 bows to Radha. Her name does not appear in the Bhagavata’s telling of this story, and its presence here reflects the Gaudiya setting in which the hymn is cherished.
We use the Stotranidhi text, corrected in a few places to the standard reading: “tadiyeshitajneshu” in verse 3, “vareshadapiha” in verse 4, “bimbaraktadharam” in verse 5, and “svakam” in verse 7. In verse 2 we join “…kanthasthitagraivadamodaram” so that it reads as one compound. In verse 1 we take “paramrshtamatyantato drutya” as “caught from behind by her who ran after him very fast”. Some editions divide it as “paramrshtamatyam tato”.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Parents waiting at a school gate in the evening have eyes only for one small face running towards them. The devotee of verse 4 is much the same, setting the great boons aside and asking only to keep one beloved form in the mind.
Yashoda tied him in a moment of exasperation, but behind the rope was care. Behind the small scoldings of everyday life, too, there is often the same love.
