The Jagannathashtakam is a hymn of eight verses to Jagannatha, who dwells on Nilachala at Puri with his elder brother Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra. Every verse ends with the same single request, jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayanapathagāmī bhavatu me: may Lord Jagannatha come into the path of my eyes.
The hymn begins with Krishna making music on the banks of the Yamuna in Vrindavana, then comes to the temple by the sea and to the street of the chariot festival. In the seventh verse the devotee asks for no kingdom, no gold and no beautiful bride, only for the sight of the Lord. We give the text in three scripts, with the meaning of each verse in Kannada and English.

He who at times makes the finest music in the groves on the banks of the Kalindi (Yamuna), who joyfully, like a bee, tastes the lotus faces of the gopis, whose feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra the lord of the gods and Ganesha: may that Lord Jagannatha come into the path of my eyes, that is, may he show himself to me.
With the flute in his left hand, a peacock feather on his head and fine silk at his waist, casting sidelong glances at his companions from the corners of his eyes, ever at home in the play of his life in lovely Vrindavana: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
On the shore of the great ocean, on the Blue Mountain (Nilachala) bright with golden lustre, he dwells within the temple with his mighty brother Balabhadra, with Subhadra between them, and gives all the gods their chance to serve him: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
An ocean of compassion, lovely as a row of rain-laden clouds, worshipped by the foremost gods led by Lakshmi, Sarasvati, the Moon and the lotus-born Brahma of spotless radiance, whose deeds are sung by the Upanishads, the crown of the Vedas: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
Riding on his chariot along the road, he listens kindly at every step to the hymns that rise from the crowds of brahmins gathered there. Ocean of mercy, kinsman of all the worlds, with Lakshmi, the daughter of the ocean, beside him: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
He wears the supreme Brahman as his crest ornament (or, he is the crest jewel of the supreme Brahman), and his eyes are wide as the petals of a blossoming blue lotus. He dwells on Nilachala with his feet set on the head of Ananta, the serpent Shesha. He is the bliss of love itself, and delights in the embrace of Radha’s loving form: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for gold, pleasures or splendour. I do not ask for a beautiful bride, the kind every man desires. May Lord Jagannatha, whose deeds Shiva, lord of the pramathas, sings at every season, come into my sight: that is my only request.
O lord of the gods, take away quickly this worthless round of worldly life. O lord of the Yadavas, take away the boundless spread of my sins. Ah, he stands here unmoving to protect the poor and the helpless at all times: may that Lord Jagannatha come into my sight.
About this hymn
The colophon names Shankaracharya as the author. As with many hymns that carry his name, the date and authorship cannot be settled with certainty. Tradition also says that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sang it when he first saw Jagannatha at Puri in the early sixteenth century, and it is especially dear to Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
At Puri in Odisha, in the temple on the rise called Nilachala by the sea, stand the wooden images of Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannatha, with Subhadra in the middle (verse 3). The first two verses describe the Krishna of Vrindavana, since for his devotees Jagannatha is Krishna himself. Verse 5 is a picture of the Ratha Yatra in the month of Ashadha: the Lord comes out into the street on his chariot and the crowds sing his praise all along the way.
It is an ashtaka of eight verses in the shikharini metre. In each verse three lines paint one aspect of the Lord and the fourth returns as the prayer for his sight. In verse 7 the devotee lets go of worldly wants, and in verse 8 he asks for release from worldly life and from his sins.
On the text: in verse 2 we print the ca that our source gives in brackets, since the metre needs it (sahacarakaṭākṣaṃ ca vidadhat). In verse 7 we keep our source’s na ca kanakatā bhogavibhave, where other editions read na ca kanakatāṃ bhogavibhavaṃ, with the same sense. The third line of verse 8 reads in our source aho dīnānāthaṃ nihitam acalaṃ pātum aniśam, but many editions read aho dīne ‘nāthe nihitacaraṇo niścitam idam: this is certain, his feet rest with the poor and the helpless. Some editions also add a ninth verse of phalashruti.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Waiting on a crowded railway platform for someone dear who has been away a long time, our eyes look for nothing else. The moment that face appears, we do not wonder what they have brought us. The prayer of this ashtaka is of that kind: no list of kingdoms, gold or comforts, only the longing to see. These verses remind us that the first wish of love is less to receive than to see, and to be near.
