Ahoi Ashtami is a fast kept by mothers for the well-being and long life of their children, and the goddess worshipped is Ahoi Mata. It falls on the eighth tithi of the dark fortnight before Deepavali, usually four days after Karva Chauth and about eight days before the Lakshmi Puja of Deepavali. In the North’s purnimanta reckoning this is Kartika krishna ashtami; in the amanta calendar of Karnataka it is Ashwayuja krishna ashtami. The day is the same in both. It is kept chiefly in North India, and is also called Ahoi Aathe, from the eighth.
How the fast is kept
Like Karva Chauth it is a strict fast, and most women keep it without water. The mother takes a sankalpa in the morning and fasts until the stars can be seen in the evening sky; in some families the fast is held until the Moon is seen instead, but on this tithi the Moon rises late in the night, so most break it at twilight. The fast was traditionally kept for sons. Today it is kept for daughters and sons alike.
The image of Ahoi Mata is drawn on the wall in geru, red ochre, or embroidered on cloth. It is drawn with eight corners, with small children around the goddess and the animal of the story beside her. A karva, a small clay pot, is set on a kalash filled with water, its spout closed with blades of grass. Puris, puas and halwa are offered and then given, with some money, to a Brahmin.
The story
A moneylender’s wife, mother of seven sons, went out before Deepavali to dig earth for repairing the house. Her spade struck and killed a young animal in its burrow: a lion’s cub in the telling most often given, and a porcupine’s young in the Punjabi telling. Within the year all seven of her sons died. The grieving couple set out on a pilgrimage meaning to end their lives, and collapsed on the way. A voice told them to go home, serve the cow and worship Ahoi Mata. The woman drew the image of the animal she had killed, fasted and repented, and the goddess gave her children again.
Radha Kund
At Govardhan in Mathura district this day is kept with a bath in Radha Kund. Couples who wish for a child bathe there, and Drik Panchang lists the Govardhana Radha Kunda Snan on the same day as Ahoi Ashtami.
Which day Anudina gives
Because the fast is broken at dusk, Anudina gives Ahoi Ashtami on the day on which the Ashtami of this dark fortnight is running at pradosha, the twilight after sunset when the stars come out. In 2026 that is 1 November, and in 2027 it is 22 October, the date Drik Panchang also gives for New Delhi.
Anudina shows Ahoi Ashtami under the North Indian custom, and under the South Indian custom when “Show festivals of other regions too” is turned on.
Related days
Every Ashtami of the dark fortnight is also the monthly Kalashtami of Bhairava, and in 2026 the two fall together on 1 November. The fortnight runs on from here to Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi and the Lakshmi Puja of Deepavali amavasya.
