Angaraka Chaturthi, also called Angaraka Sankashti and, in Maharashtra, Angarki, is a Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday. Sankashti is the monthly vrata of Ganesha on the fourth tithi of the dark fortnight, kept with a fast that ends at moonrise. Tuesday is the day of Mangala, the planet Mars, whose other name is Angaraka, and when the two meet the day carries his name. It belongs to no particular month. It comes whenever the calendar brings a Sankashti onto a Tuesday, which happens a little less than twice a year on average, and some years have only one.
The story
Angaraka, the one red as a glowing ember, is the son of the earth, Bhumi or Prithvi. In the telling most often given his father is the sage Bharadwaja, a devotee of Ganesha, from whom the boy learnt the Vedas. Angaraka did long tapas to Ganesha, and when Ganesha appeared and offered him a boon, he asked that his own name be joined to Ganesha’s for ever. Ganesha granted that a Sankashti falling on a Tuesday, Angaraka’s day, would be called after him, and that those who fasted and worshipped on it would have their wishes met. In one version Angaraka also asked to be raised among the devas, and was given the name Mangala, the auspicious one.
These are traditional tellings, retold by many writers. The accounts consulted for this page do not name the Purana they come from, and this page does not guess at one.
How it is kept
The observance is that of any Sankashti, kept with more care. The fast runs through the day. In the evening Ganesha is worshipped as on every Sankashti, and in many homes the Ganapati Atharvashirsha is recited before the moon rises. The fast is broken only after the moon has been seen and arghya offered to it.
The Ganesha temples are much more crowded than on an ordinary Sankashti. At the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai the queues on an Angarki begin in the early morning, and the city’s newspapers report the crowds when the day comes round.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina does not work out Angaraka Chaturthi on its own. It first places Sankashti, on the day on which the chaturthi of the dark fortnight is running at moonrise, computed for the reader’s own place. When that day is a Tuesday, it adds a second row on the same day naming it Angaraka Chaturthi. The row carries the Sankashti’s moonrise, which is the hour at which the fast is broken.
Because moonrise differs from town to town, the Sankashti page explains how the chaturthi can be running at moonrise in one place and not in another. In an occasional month, therefore, one town may have an Angaraka Chaturthi while another, whose Sankashti falls a day apart, does not. The row is shown in every regional setting, wherever Sankashti is shown. The next date Anudina gives is 22 June 2027.
Related days
The chaturthi of the bright fortnight is a different observance, Vinayaka Chaturthi, kept at midday. Anudina marks the other weekday combinations in the same way, as a second row on the day of the monthly vrata: a Pradosha on a Monday is Soma Pradosha, a Pradosha on a Saturday is Shani Pradosha, and an amavasya on a Monday is Somavati Amavasya.
