Lalita Panchami is the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Ashwayuja, the fifth day of Sharad Navaratri, and it is given to the goddess Lalita. She is also called Tripura Sundari, Rajarajeshwari and Shodashi, and she is counted among the ten Mahavidyas. For those who worship the goddess in the Sri Vidya tradition, in which she is the central deity, it is one of the important days of the year.
Who Lalita is
Her story is told in the Lalitopakhyana, the last part of the Brahmanda Purana, as a conversation in which Hayagriva instructs the sage Agastya. Shiva, disturbed in his tapas, burns Kama, the god of desire, to ash with his third eye. One of Shiva’s attendants shapes a figure from that ash, and it comes to life as Bhandasura, a demon who grows strong enough to overpower the gods. The gods hold a great fire sacrifice, and the goddess rises from its flames as Lalita. She marries Shiva as Kameshvara, leads her armies against Bhandasura, destroys him and his city of Shunyaka, and at the end gives Kama back his life.
The Lalita Sahasranama, her thousand names, is part of the same text. Its fourth name, chidagni-kunda-sambhuta, calls her the one born from the fire altar of consciousness: the whole story in a single name. Lalita itself means the graceful one, she who plays.
How the day is kept
In most homes it is kept simply, inside the Navaratri worship already under way. The goddess is worshipped as Lalita, and the Lalita Sahasranama or the Lalita Trishati is recited, often as a kumkuma archana, with kumkuma offered at each name, followed by naivedya. Sri Vidya households that worship the Sri Chakra give the day a fuller puja.
The full form is the Upanga Lalita vrata, which the Skanda Purana gives in the words of Kartikeya. It is kept mostly in Gujarat and in parts of Maharashtra. Its order, as Drik Panchang summarises it, is this: the teeth are cleaned with twigs of the apamarga plant, then a bath and an unstitched garment; an image of the goddess is set in a small mandapa and worshipped with the sixteen upacharas, especially with durva grass; the vrata katha is heard; the night is kept awake with song and music; and the image is given visarjana the next morning. A shorter form keeps a single meal at night, the nakta vrata, and offers arghya to the moon at moonrise.
Which day
The vrata belongs to the Panchami of Ashwayuja shukla paksha, but the texts differ on which part of the day the Panchami must cover. The Vrataraja asks for the Panchami that stands at midday. Other authorities, the Krityaratnavali among them, prefer the Panchami that stands at night, because the goddess is Shakti. Anudina follows the Vrataraja: it gives the day on which Panchami holds at midday, and when Panchami holds midday on both days or on neither, the first of the two. In 2026 that is Thursday, 15 October, in India.
Some calendars call this day Lalita’s jayanti. North Indian calendars keep Lalita Jayanti, also called Shodashi Jayanti, on a different day, the full moon of Magha. The two are separate observances, and a household that keeps one need not move it to the other.
