Pohela Boishakh, also written Poila Baisakh, is the Bengali new year, the first day of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali solar calendar. Boishakh begins after the sun enters Mesha, so the day falls on the 14th or 15th of April. It is kept in West Bengal and by Bengalis wherever they live, and in Bangladesh it is one of the major public festivals of the year. The greeting of the day is Shubho Noboborsho, a happy new year.
The Bengali year
The era is the Bangabda, the Bengali San, and the year that opened on Pohela Boishakh in 2026 was 1433. How the era began is not settled. One account credits the Mughal emperor Akbar, who wanted the revenue year to follow the harvest and is said to have had his astronomer Fathullah Shirazi join the solar Hindu year to a year count taken from the Islamic calendar. Another credits Shashanka, the seventh century king of Gauda, and temple inscriptions that name the Bangabda before Akbar’s time are cited in its favour. Both accounts are current, and the question is best left open.
How the day is kept
The old year closes on the last day of Chaitra, Chaitra Sankranti, which in parts of Bengal is the day of the Charak puja that ends the Gajan festival of Shiva. The new year begins the next morning. Houses are cleaned and decorated, people dress in new clothes, and sweets are made and shared with visitors.
For traders the day is Haal Khata, the new ledger. The old year’s accounts are settled, a new account book is opened, and customers who come to clear their dues are given sweets. In Kolkata shopkeepers and businessmen offer puja at the Kalighat and Dakshineswar Kali temples in the morning, and shops are hung with garlands of marigold and mango leaves.
In Bangladesh the day brings the Boishakhi mela, fairs with sweets, toys and rides, and in Dhaka the Mangal Shobhajatra, a procession at dawn organised by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Dhaka, which UNESCO listed as intangible cultural heritage in 2016. A meal of panta bhat, soaked rice, with fried hilsa is widely tied to the day there, though some hold it to be a recent custom rather than an old one.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives Pohela Boishakh on Boishakh 1 by the Bengali rule for the first day of a solar month. When the sun enters Mesha between sunrise and midnight, the month begins on the following day; when it enters after midnight, on the day after that. In practice Boishakh 1 is the day after the calendar date of the Mesha sankranti. This is the reckoning of the West Bengal almanacs, and for 2027 it gives 15 April. Pohela Boishakh appears in Anudina under the North Indian custom, and for readers on the South Indian custom when festivals of other regions are shown.
Bangladesh follows a revised calendar, adopted officially in 1987, in which the new year is fixed at 14 April every year. A Bengali family in Dhaka and one in Kolkata may therefore keep the new year a day apart, each correctly by its own calendar.
The other new years of the same sun
Pohela Boishakh is one of a family of solar new years kept at Mesha sankranti: Bohag Bihu in Assam, which Anudina places by the same rule and so on the same day, Vishu in Kerala and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu. Each region has its own rule for the day that opens the month, so they can fall a day apart: in 2027 Puthandu is on 14 April and the other three on the 15th. The new year of Karnataka and the Telugu states, Ugadi, is lunar. It follows the moon, comes earlier in the spring, and moves from year to year, while the solar new years stay close to the same April date.
