A sankalpa names the moment it is made: the year, the month, the tithi, the weekday, the nakshatra. For a rite begun after sunrise there is nothing to decide. For one begun after midnight but before the local sunrise, usually between four and six in the morning, as with the morning sandhyavandana (pratah sandhya) in the Brahma muhurta, there is. The clock on the wall changed the date at midnight; the sky has not yet changed the day. In those hours the parts of the sankalpa follow the Sun, Moon and stars, not the clock, and which values you say depends on your Veda, shakha and sampradaya.
The rule every tradition shares: the day begins at sunrise
In all the mainstream traditions of Sanatana Dharma a new day, the vara, does not begin at twelve midnight. One day-and-night, the ahoratra, begins at the moment of local sunrise and runs until the next sunrise.
Suppose you sit for pratah sandhya at 4:40 AM on a Monday by the calendar. The Sun has not risen where you are, so you are still in the last quarter (yama) of the day before. The weekday in the sankalpa is therefore Bhanu vasare or Aditya vasare (Sunday), not Soma vasare (Monday). The weekday turns to Monday only when the Sun crosses the horizon.
Where traditions differ: tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana
The vara is tied to sunrise. The other four limbs (tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana) are handled differently in the hours before dawn, and three ways are in use. Say it the way your family does.
1. As it runs now (pratyaksha, kala-pravaha)
Kept by: most Smarta (Krishna Yajurveda and Rigveda) and Madhva families. It is the prevailing practice in Udupi and across South India.
The rule: the vara stays with the day before (Sunday), but the tithi and nakshatra are taken as they stand in the sky at that minute. If a new tithi or nakshatra began in the night, at 2:00 AM say, the sankalpa at 4:40 AM uses the new one.
As said: … Bhanu vasare, [the tithi running at 4:40 AM] tithau, [the nakshatra running at 4:40 AM] nakshatra yuktayam …
2. As at the last sunrise (udaya-vyapini)
Kept by: many Sri Vaishnava (Vishishtadvaita) families, following a strict reading of the Apastamba or Bodhayana sutra manuals.
The rule: the whole of time is bound to the sunrise that began the day. Pratah sandhya is taken as the closing rite of the ahoratra still running, so the tithi and nakshatra are those that stood at Sunday’s sunrise, and any change after midnight is set aside.
As said: … Bhanu vasare, [the tithi at Sunday’s sunrise] tithau, [the nakshatra at Sunday’s sunrise] nakshatra yuktayam …
3. As the day about to dawn (the printed panchanga’s day)
Kept by: several North Indian Smarta and purnimanta traditions, and some Rigveda (Ashvalayana sutra) families in the late ushas, the twilight before sunrise.
The rule: the twilight is taken as the threshold of the coming day. A printed panchanga lists each date by the tithi at its sunrise (the udaya tithi), and to agree with it the sankalpa looks ahead: the weekday of the calendar date, with the tithi and nakshatra of the sunrise about to come.
As said: … Soma vasare, [the tithi at Monday’s sunrise] tithau, [the nakshatra at Monday’s sunrise] nakshatra yuktayam …
At a glance
| If your tradition is | Weekday (vara) to say | Tithi and nakshatra to say |
|---|---|---|
| Smarta, Madhva as it runs now |
The day before (Sunday) | Those running at the moment |
| Sri Vaishnava as at the last sunrise |
The day before (Sunday) | Those of the last sunrise |
| North Indian as the day about to dawn |
The calendar’s day (Monday) | Those of the coming sunrise |
A worked example
Udupi, 4:40 AM on Monday 12 October 2026. Sunday’s sunrise was at 6:21 AM, in Ashvayuja shukla pratipada and Chitra. Pratipada ended at 9:31 PM on Sunday and Chitra at 10:32 PM. Monday’s sunrise is at 6:21 AM.
- As it runs now Bhanu vasare, dvitiyayam, Svati nakshatre: Sunday, with the dvitiya and Svati that began in the night
- As at the last sunrise Bhanu vasare, pratipadi, Chitra nakshatre: Sunday, as it stood at Sunday’s sunrise
- As the day about to dawn Soma (Indu) vasare, dvitiyayam, Svati nakshatre: Monday, as it will stand at Monday’s sunrise
By the small hours nearly a full day has passed since the last sunrise, and a tithi or a nakshatra lasts about a day. So “as at the last sunrise” usually names an earlier tithi and nakshatra than the other two, as here: at Udupi, a hundred minutes before sunrise, on about nineteen mornings in twenty. “As it runs now” and “as the day about to dawn” usually differ only in the weekday; they differ further only when a tithi or nakshatra changes in the last hour or two before sunrise.
After sunrise
For any rite begun after the Sun has visibly risen the traditions agree: the vara of the new day, with the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana running at that moment.
In Anudina
Before sunrise, the Sankalpa card on Today says which way it is using, in the row Sankalpa before sunrise. A tap opens the three ways, each with what it gives for the morning ahead at your place. The same choice is under More, Advanced, and on the full sankalpa page as “Before sunrise”. Until you choose, it follows your tradition: Smarta and Madhva as it runs now, Sri Vaishnava as at the last sunrise. Where your family’s paddhati differs from all three, follow it.
