Context and commentary on verse 10.17
Arjuna’s question is very practical. He knows the principle, but meditation needs something to hold on to. For Shankara ‘bhava’ means things, supports for meditation. Sridhara Swami says: though he may be meditated on through the different glories, one must know in which things. His note on the next verse is clearer still: tell it in detail, so that even when the mind wanders outward, it thinks of you wherever it goes.
Ramanuja applies the word ‘yogi’ to Arjuna himself: I, established in the yoga of devotion. On his reading the question is: beyond understanding, knowledge and the rest named in verses four and five, in which other things, not yet named, am I to think of you as their inner ruler? Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
The mind needs a support. Though it is true that God is everywhere, an image, a name or a scene helps meditation.
This is why those learning meditation are given a support such as the breath, a mantra or the flame of a lamp. Bringing the wandering mind back there again and again is the practice itself.
