Context and commentary on verse 10.23
‘Rudranam shankaras chasmi’, among the Rudras I am Shankara. Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami explain this simply as Shankara within the group of the eleven Rudras. The traditions hold different positions on the relation of Shiva and Vishnu. This page does not judge between them. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sridhara Swami gives the reason for naming yakshas and rakshasas together: the likeness of their natures, such as fierceness. Their lord is Kubera, called Vaishravana by Ramanuja. Among the eight Vasus comes Pavaka, that is, Agni. For Sridhara Swami ‘shikharinam’ means those with lofty peaks, and among them Meru is foremost.

For life today
In this single verse Shankara, Kubera, Agni and Meru, the finest of different worlds, come together. To the eye of this chapter, excellence wherever it is seen is light from one source.
Many families among us worship both Shiva and Vishnu. Devotees of different paths living with mutual respect is in keeping with the spirit of this chapter.
