Context and commentary on verse 12.17
Four verbs, four situations. Shankara pairs them: he does not rejoice when he gains what he likes, does not hate when the unwelcome comes, does not grieve when parted from what is dear, and does not crave what he has not got. Ramanuja names the causes of grief: the loss of wife, children or wealth. Even in such losses he does not collapse.
On ‘shubhashubhaparityagi’, one who has given up good and evil, Shankara speaks of good and evil actions, and Sridhara Swami of merit and sin. Why give up merit? Ramanuja’s answer: merit, like sin, is a cause of bondage, and both bind alike. Many read this not as giving up doing good, but as not clinging to its fruit. Madhva notes this in his comment on the sixteenth verse: even after saying ‘free from elation and the rest’, a doubt may remain that these still come now and then, and to remove it ‘yo na hrishyati’ is said again.

For life today
This verse need not be read as a command, ‘do not grieve’. When we lose those we love, sorrow is natural and healthy. What Krishna describes is a state that comes from long practice.
If, even after months, grief has brought daily life to a halt, if sleep, food and work have all given way, it is good to seek the help of a doctor or a counsellor. If thoughts come that life is not worth living, contact a doctor or someone you trust without delay.
