Context and commentary on verse 12.19
For Shankara ‘mauni’ is one who keeps his speech restrained, and ‘content with whatever’ is content if he gets just what keeps the body going. For this he quotes the Mahabharata: one who wears whatever he gets, eats whatever he gets and sleeps wherever he may, the gods know as a brahmana. For him ‘aniketa’ means one with no fixed dwelling, the homeless renunciate. Sridhara Swami reads it the same way.
Ramanuja reads ‘aniketa’ differently: one who is not attached to home and the like, since his understanding is steady in the self. In his sense even one who lives in a home can be ‘aniketa’. According to him the list from the thirteenth verse to here is that of the karma yogi devoted to the self, and the next verse closes the chapter by declaring the superiority of the one devoted to bhakti yoga. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
‘Mauni’, restrained in speech. In today’s age of social media, when an opinion is given at once on everything, this quality is rare and precious.
Ramanuja’s sense of ‘aniketa’ gives comfort to householders too. For those who must change homes in old age, or move to their children’s town, the reminder that the mind’s true dwelling is not in the walls of a house is a support.
