Context and commentary on verse 13.26
The birth of every being in one formula: the union of the field and its knower. Shankara asks what kind of union this is. Not like a rope tied round a pot, nor like parts fastened together, for the knower is without parts, like space. It is the non-discrimination that superimposes each on the other, he says, like silver seen in mother-of-pearl. Ramanuja says it simply: a being is always born with the two joined, never apart.
Sridhara Swami marks the place of this section in the Gita’s overall design: karma yoga was expanded in chapters three, four and five, the yoga of meditation in chapters six and eight. So here Krishna expands sankhya, the discernment of the self. According to Madhva, from here the nature of prakriti, purusha and the Lord is told again, together with qualities such as sameness.

For life today
Every life is a meeting of body and awareness. Medicine today too is learning to stop keeping body and mind in separate boxes and to see them together.
Depression after a heart attack, anxiety alongside long-standing pain: these are common. Along with treatment of the body, it is good to speak openly with the doctor about the state of the mind too.
