Context and commentary on verse 13.28
What does ‘injuring the self by the self’ mean? Shankara recalls the Isha Upanishad’s ‘atmahano janah’, people who slay the self: the ignorant, not seeing the true Self, ‘kill’ it through ignorance, taking the body to be themselves and being born and dying again and again. One who has seen the Lord equal in all does not commit this injury. Sridhara Swami says the same: covering one’s nature of being, awareness and bliss through ignorance is itself self-injury.
Ramanuja says it from the other side: he does not injure himself, that is, he protects himself, frees himself from worldly existence. For him the ‘Lord’ here is the self that supports and governs each body, distinct from the forms of god and the rest, of the single form of knowledge. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
‘Injuring oneself’ takes many forms in life today: working at the cost of sleep, tobacco, alcohol, and the inner voice that runs oneself down.
One who sees the same Lord in all should see him in oneself too. Turning towards oneself the compassion we show others is one lovely sense of this verse. If thoughts come that life is not worth living, contact a doctor or someone you trust without delay.
