Context and commentary on verse 14.10
The gunas are not fixed, there is constant rise and fall among them. According to Shankara, when one guna grows by overpowering the other two, it begins its own work: sattva knowledge and happiness, rajas action and craving, tamas veiling and heedlessness. Sridhara Swami says a guna rises through ‘adrishta’, the unseen fruit of past action.
Ramanuja gives two causes: past karma, and imbalance in the food that nourishes the body. The second is notable. In this way they move by rising and being overpowered in turn. The seventeenth chapter speaks at length of three kinds of food. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Clear in the morning, rushed at midday, dull after lunch: this is how many people’s day goes. Noticing the rise and fall of the gunas lets us keep important work for the clear hours.
Present-day understanding supports Ramanuja’s word on food: the sluggishness after a heavy meal and the restlessness from too much coffee or tea are familiar to all. Food alone does not decide the mind, but it has its share.
