Context and commentary on verse 14.12
The senses the acharyas give to ‘lobha’ show its different faces. For Shankara it is the wish to take another’s property, for Ramanuja the miserliness that cannot let go of one’s own, for Sridhara Swami the longing that keeps growing however much money comes. Sridhara Swami catches ‘ashama’ in one sentence: the never-ending resolve, ‘I will do this, and then I will do that.’
According to Ramanuja ‘pravritti’ is the nature that keeps moving even without a purpose, and ‘ashama’ the senses never coming to rest. For Shankara ‘ashama’ is a constant flow of elation and attraction. Sridhara Swami gives large enterprises such as building a house as an example of ‘arambha’. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Sridhara Swami’s ‘this, and then that’ is an exact picture of life today. An endless list, a phone that never stops, goals that never satisfy.
Noticing these signs is the first step. Disturbed sleep, a racing heart, constant irritability: these are warnings the body gives. Learning to say ‘enough’ is part of health.
