Context and commentary on verse 14.13
Against the ‘light’ of sattva stands ‘darkness’, against the ‘activity’ of rajas ‘inactivity’. For Shankara ‘aprakasha’ is non-discrimination and ‘moha’ dullness. Ramanuja’s definitions are precise: ‘aprakasha’ is knowledge not arising, ‘apravritti’ torpor, ‘pramada’ the inattention that leads one to do what should not be done, ‘moha’ wrong knowledge.
Sridhara Swami calls ‘pramada’ lack of attention to what is to be done, and ‘moha’ stubborn attachment to what is false. He makes clear that these are marks, signs by which to know that tamas has increased. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
This list should not be used to call another person ‘tamasic’. Losing interest, activity coming to a halt and failing attention can also be symptoms of depression.
If such a state lasts more than two weeks, and especially if life feels not worth living, it is an illness that responds to treatment, not a flaw of character. Contact a doctor or someone you trust without delay.
