Context and commentary on verse 14.18
Shankara reads this in the language of worlds: the sattvic are born in the world of the gods and the like, the rajasic among humans, the tamasic among cattle and the like. The ‘lowest guna’ is tamas and its ‘ways’ are sleep, sloth and the rest. Sridhara Swami recalls the Taittiriya’s measure of bliss: worlds of joy rising a hundredfold at each step, according to the excellence of sattva.
Ramanuja’s sense points another way: those of sattva go ‘upward’, that is, step by step from the bondage of samsara towards liberation. The rajasic stay ‘in the middle’, in the very cycle of acting for fruit, enjoying the fruit, being born again and acting again. The tamasic descend to lower births. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Up, middle and down are directions more than positions. Which way we are moving matters more than where we stand.
Ramanuja’s ‘cycle in the middle’ fits life today: earn, spend, earn again. Pausing a moment in that cycle to ask ‘what is all this for?’ is the first step upward.
