Context and commentary on verse 16.16
Sridhara Swami’s simile is clear: scattered by a mind spread over many wishes, they are caught in the net of delusion like fish caught in a net. Shankara gives the reason delusion is called a ‘net’: lack of discernment covers like a net. Those whose sin has grown this way, he says, fall into a hell such as the Vaitarani.
Ramanuja adds a harsh truth: while they are still thinking ‘I shall do this, and that, and another’, believing everything possible by themselves without the help of the divine, ‘madhye mritah’, they die in the middle and fall into hell. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
‘Anekachitta’, a mind spread in many directions at once. Doing many tasks at once may look efficient, but it increases mistakes and tiredness too.
Ramanuja’s phrase ‘dying in the middle’ makes one think. It is wise to do today the good deeds we keep postponing and to say the loving words that need saying.
