Context and commentary on verse 16.17
Shankara’s explanation of ‘atmasambhavita’ is sharp: those esteemed as possessing every virtue by themselves, not by the good. The ‘stabdha’ are those who bow before no one. ‘Namayajna’ is sacrifice in name only, without the parts the rules require, done with the hypocrisy of flying the flag of dharma.
Ramanuja gives ‘namayajna’ another sense: sacrifices whose only aim is to gain the name ‘one who has sacrificed’. He calls the ‘stabdha’ those who think themselves complete and do nothing. According to Sridhara Swami these two verses show that the earlier wish, ‘I shall sacrifice’, is full of hypocrisy and ego and is not sattvic. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Many families borrow for lavish ceremonies and spend years repaying. The worth of a ritual lies not in its cost but in its spirit.
‘Stabdha’, those who do not bend. Bending to admit a mistake or to ask forgiveness saves relationships.
