(English IAST)
tasmādomityudāhṛtya yajñadānatapaḥkriyāḥ|
pravartante vidhānoktāḥ satataṃ brahmavādinām || 24 ||
- ಯಜ್ಞದಾನತಪಃಕ್ರಿಯಾಃ (यज्ञदानतपःक्रियाः, yajñadānatapaḥkriyāḥ) = ಯಜ್ಞ, ದಾನ, ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳು (acts of sacrifice, giving and austerity)
- ಬ್ರಹ್ಮವಾದಿನಾಂ ವಿಧಾನೋಕ್ತಾಃ (ब्रह्मवादिनां विधानोक्ताः, brahmavādināṃ vidhānoktāḥ) = ವೇದವಾದಿಗಳ, ವಿಧಿ ಹೇಳಿದ (of those who expound the Veda, as the rules ordain)
Therefore the acts of sacrifice, giving and austerity of those who expound the Veda, as the rules ordain, always begin with the utterance of ‘Om’.
Context and commentary on verse 17.24
According to Sridhara Swami the greatness of the three words is told one by one from here, first of Om. Since this designation of Brahman is so excellent, acts begin with its utterance. Shankara takes the ‘brahmavadins’ as those whose nature is to speak of Brahman, and ‘vidhanokta’ as ordained by scripture.
Ramanuja points to a connection: the Vedas too begin with ‘Om’, so both the Vedas and Vedic acts are connected with Om. The ‘brahmavadins’ for him are those of the three varnas who recite the Veda. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Pausing for a moment before starting work to recall its purpose is close to the spirit of Om. That moment gathers attention to one point.
The practice in hospitals of the whole team pausing for a moment before surgery to confirm everything is also a ‘pause at the beginning’ of this kind.
