ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಶ್ರದ್ಧಯಾ ಹುತಂ ದತ್ತಂ ತಪಸ್ತಪ್ತಂ ಕೃತಂ ಚ ಯತ್।
ಅಸದಿತ್ಯುಚ್ಯತೇ ಪಾರ್ಥ ನ ಚ ತತ್ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ನೋ ಇಹ ॥ 28 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तं तपस्तप्तं कृतं च यत्।
असदित्युच्यते पार्थ न च तत्प्रेत्य नो इह ॥ 28 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಪಾರ್ಥ ಅಶ್ರದ್ಧಯಾ ಹುತಂ ದತ್ತಮ್ (पार्थ अश्रद्धया हुतं दत्तम्, pārtha aśraddhayā hutaṃ dattam) = ಪಾರ್ಥ, ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಹೋಮ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದು (what is offered or given without faith, O Partha)
- ತಪ್ತಂ ತಪಃ ಕೃತಂ ಚ ಯತ್ (तप्तं तपः कृतं च यत्, taptaṃ tapaḥ kṛtaṃ ca yat) = ಮಾಡಿದ ತಪಸ್ಸು, ಮಾಡಿದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕೆಲಸ (austerity practised or anything done)
- ಅಸತ್ ಇತಿ ಉಚ್ಯತೇ (असत् इति उच्यते, asat iti ucyate) = ಅಸತ್ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ (is called asat, unreal)
- ತತ್ ನ ಚ ಪ್ರೇತ್ಯ ನೋ ಇಹ (तत् न च प्रेत्य नो इह, tat na ca pretya no iha) = ಅದು ಪರದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಇಹದಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲ (it is of no avail hereafter nor here)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪಾರ್ಥ, ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಹೋಮ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದು, ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಮಾಡಿದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕೆಲಸ ‘ಅಸತ್’ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಪರಲೋಕಕ್ಕೂ ಆಗದು, ಈ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೂ ಆಗದು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Whatever is offered, given, practised as austerity or done without faith, O Partha, is called ‘asat’. It is of no avail hereafter, nor here.

ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಆರಂಭವಾಯಿತೋ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೇ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ: ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಹೋಮ, ದಾನ, ತಪಸ್ಸು, ಸ್ತುತಿ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ‘ಅಸತ್’, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವು ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನು ಸೇರುವ ದಾರಿಯ ಹೊರಗಿವೆ. ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಶ್ರಮದ್ದಾದರೂ ಅವು ಪರಲೋಕದ ಫಲಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗದು, ಸಜ್ಜನರು ನಿಂದಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಫಲವಿಲ್ಲ.
The chapter ends where it began: with faith. According to Shankara the offering, giving, austerity, praise and salutation done without faith are all ‘asat’, because they lie outside the path that leads to the Lord. However laborious, they bring no fruit hereafter, and since the good censure them, there is no fruit here either.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದನ್ನು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರೀಯ ಹೋಮಾದಿಗಳೂ ಮೋಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಆಗದು, ಸಾಂಸಾರಿಕ ಫಲಕ್ಕೂ ಆಗದು. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕರ್ಮಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ತೊಡಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಕರ್ಮದ ನಿಂದೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಋಗ್ವೇದ ಖಿಲದ ಒಂದು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಉದ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ‘ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ’ ಮಾಡದ ಯಜ್ಞಾದಿ ಕರ್ಮ ನಿಷ್ಫಲ, ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದನ್ನು ದೇವತೆಗಳು ‘ಸತ್’ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಹದಿನೇಳನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
Ramanuja says it briefly: even scriptural rites such as offerings, done without faith, avail neither for liberation nor for worldly fruit. According to Sridhara Swami action without faith is censured here so that one may engage in all actions with faith alone. Madhva quotes a line of the Rigveda Khila: rites such as sacrifice not done ‘for That’ are fruitless, and what is done for That the gods call ‘Sat’. Thus the seventeenth chapter ends.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಬೇಗ ದಣಿವು ತರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅರ್ಥ ಕಂಡ ಕೆಲಸ ದಣಿವಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆಲಸದ ಉದ್ದೇಶವನ್ನು ಆಗಾಗ ನೆನೆಯುವುದು ಬಳಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಮದ್ದು.
Work done mechanically soon brings exhaustion, while work whose meaning we see gives strength even in tiredness. Recalling the purpose of our work now and then is a remedy for burnout.
ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಕುರುಡು ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾದ ಮನಸ್ಸು. ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನೂ ಮನಸಿಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅದು ‘ಸತ್’.
Faith is not blind belief but a sincere mind in what one does. Even a small task done wholeheartedly is ‘Sat’.
