Context and commentary on verse 7.12
The half-line ‘I am not in them; they are in me’ is puzzling at first reading. He who said ‘I am the taste in water’ now says ‘I am not in them’. The acharyas untie this knot in different ways.
For Shankara ‘I am not in them’ means that I am not subject to them, as worldly beings are subject to the gunas. ‘They are in me’ means they are under my control.
Ramanuja resolves it with the image of body and self. Ordinarily a self gains some benefit from its body. The Lord gains no benefit from these states that are his body, and his being does not rest on them. All this is only his play.
For Madhva ‘na tv aham teshu’ means he does not have them as his support. He gives a line from the Gitakalpa: the whole world rests on him, and he rests on nothing.

Waves rise and fall in the sea. The waves are in the sea, but the sea does not rest on any one wave. This is also a useful picture for looking at the waves of our own minds: anger, enthusiasm, lethargy, calm.
The anger of a bad day is not who we are; it is a wave that rose in us. Once we notice that gap, it becomes easier to pause for a moment before reacting to the wave.
