Context and commentary on verse 7.14
This is one of the key verses of the Gita’s teaching of surrender. Maya is hard to cross, but not without a way. The ‘eva’ in ‘mam eva’, me alone, is what matters here.
For Shankara maya is Vishnu’s own power, which deludes all beings. Those who set aside all dharmas and take refuge wholly in the wielder of maya, who is their own self, are freed from the bondage of samsara.
Ramanuja makes his central position on the word ‘maya’ clear here: maya does not mean the unreal. It is a real power that produces wondrous effects, prakriti made of sattva, rajas and tamas. It hides the Lord’s nature and makes material things seem the only things worth enjoying. Taking refuge in the supremely compassionate one is the way out of it.
Madhva derives ‘daivi’ from the root ‘div’: because it belongs to the Lord who plays the game of creation and the rest, it is exceedingly powerful, and even Brahma and Rudra cannot cross it without Vishnu’s grace. Offering even one’s salutations to the guru and others to the Lord within them is, he says, part of ‘mam eva prapadyante’.

For life today
Habits are like a river that is hard to cross. People who know they should stop smoking and still go back to it again and again are one example. ‘Knowing is enough’ is often not enough.
A small reflection of surrender can be seen in everyday life. Many have overcome, with the help of a doctor, family or a support group, a habit they could not beat alone. Admitting ‘I cannot do this by myself’ is often the first step of the crossing.
