Context and commentary on verse 7.19
‘Vasudevah sarvam’ is among the shortest sentences in the Gita. Just two words, yet the acharyas differ deeply on what it means. ‘At the end of many births’ suggests that this knowledge ripens slowly.
For Shankara ‘Vasudevah sarvam’ means that Vasudeva is the self of all, and that he is one’s own inner self. After the impressions of many births have ripened, the wise one sees this directly. No one is equal to him or higher, and that is why he is so rare.
For Ramanuja it means something else: Vasudeva is my highest goal, the way to it, and whatever else my mind desires. This is the devotee’s stance, ‘for me he is everything’, and he argues that the context of the two preceding verses supports this meaning.
Madhva confirms the first half of the verse with a line from the Brahma Purana: after many births one knows and comes to me. Deciding which of these meanings is right is not the work of this page.

For life today
A small reflection of ‘many births’ can be seen within a single life. We at twenty, at forty and at sixty are almost different people. Some understandings come only after passing through those stages.
That is why some words of our elders do not make sense to the young at once. Waiting patiently, without forcing, is one virtue this verse teaches.
