Context and commentary on verse 8.14
After the demanding yogic procedures of the preceding verses, this verse opens a simple path. ‘Sulabhah’, easy to reach, is the gentlest word in the whole chapter.
Shankara explains why there are two words, ‘satatam’ and ‘nityashah’: ‘satatam’ means without a break, ‘nityashah’ means over a long time. Not for six months or a year, but for as long as one lives.
Ramanuja sees here the wise one of the previous chapter, who cannot sustain himself without remembering the Lord. For him ‘easy to reach’ means that the Lord himself chooses such a one. Unable to bear separation from him, the Lord himself grants the ripening of his worship and the removal of obstacles. He quotes the Upanishad, ‘yam evaisha vrinute’, whom he chooses.
For Madhva ‘nityayukta’ is one who follows the means every day, and ‘yogi’ is one complete in yoga.

For life today
In any practice, steadiness matters more than intensity. A habit of walking a little every day is easier to keep up than one long workout a week with sitting the rest of the time, and it carries less risk of injury.
The word ‘easy’ holds a promise. Even for those who know no great techniques, the simple path of remembering again and again, on ordinary days, lies open.
