Context and commentary on verse 8.15
‘Duhkhalaya’, the home of sorrow, is among the Gita’s harshest descriptions of birth. Shankara explains it as the place where three kinds of sorrow dwell: those that arise from one’s own body and mind, from other beings, and from the forces of nature. ‘Ashashvata’ means that it is not only a home of sorrow but also unstable in its very form.
Ramanuja again connects the ‘great souls’ with the wise one of the previous chapter: those who know the Lord’s nature as it is and cannot sustain themselves without him. For Madhva this is praise of attaining the Lord; that they have reached the highest perfection is itself the reason they do not return.

For life today
‘Birth itself is a home of sorrow’ may sound pessimistic at first. But that illness, old age and parting touch everyone who is born, sooner or later, is an everyday truth for doctors.
Accepting this truth is not the same as hating life. Those who accept it can often be seen growing gentler towards the pain of others.
