Dhanya means fortunate, one who has gained what was worth gaining. Each of these eight verses says who deserves that name: those who have reached the knowledge that quietens the senses, those who have left the pull of home for the forest, those who have lost the two words mine and I, those who live on alms and see the light within the heart.
On this page we give Kannada and English meanings for all eight verses. The work is a praise of the path of renunciation, so in the meanings we render plainly what the verses themselves say. The meanings follow the understanding of the Advaita tradition.

That alone is knowledge which quietens the senses. That alone is worth knowing which the Upanishads have settled as their meaning. Blessed on this earth are those whose effort is set on the highest truth. The rest keep circling about in the house of delusion.
Having first conquered the objects of the senses, and the host of enemies too, pride, delusion, attachment and hatred, they have won the kingdom of yoga. Having learnt the settled teaching and having tasted it themselves, the blessed ones wander with the forest as their home, in the happiness of the knowledge of the supreme Self, which is their beloved.
Having given up the attachment to home that becomes a cause of downfall, drinking of their own will the savour of the Upanishads’ meaning, they are free of craving and detached from the state of sense enjoyment. Keeping the company of the detached alone, the blessed ones move about in solitary places.
Having let go of those two binding words, mine and I, they hold honour and dishonour to be the same and look on all with an equal eye. Knowing the doer to be another, the blessed ones perform their deeds, which are the ripened fruit of past karma, as offerings made over to him.
Having given up the three desires, those for wealth, for progeny and for fame, looking only to the path of liberation, they carry on the body’s journey with the nectar of alms. In solitude, within the heart, the blessed twice-born behold the light that is higher than the highest, which bears the name of the supreme Self.
It is not non-being, nor being, nor both being and non-being, not great, not minute, not woman, not man, not neuter, and it is the one seed of all. Those who have worshipped that Brahman with a single mind have shone as the blessed. The others have remained bound in the rope of worldly existence.
Having looked closely at the bond of worldly existence, sunk in the mire of ignorance, empty of substance, a house of sorrow, held fast to death, birth and old age, and impermanent, the blessed ones cut it apart with the sword of knowledge and come to the final certainty.
In the forests, together with companions who are calm, who set their minds on nothing else, sweet by nature, settled in the certainty of oneness and free of delusion, the blessed ones, who have come to know the nature of the state of the Self, reflect rightly and without break on that very reality.
About this hymn
The work’s colophon gives it to Adi Shankaracharya, and it is included in the collections of his stotras. There is no further evidence, so the authorship is best held as what tradition says.
The structure is a simple one: eight verses in the vasantatilaka metre, each of them using the word dhanya. The first verse sets the theme, that real knowledge is what quietens the senses. The rest describe the conduct of those who stand in that knowledge. The three desires named in the fifth verse are those for wealth, progeny and fame, and giving them up is an old mark of renunciation.
This is a work in praise of the life of the renunciant. Dwelling in the forest, living on alms, moving through solitary places, these are pictures of that path, not advice offered to everybody. In the meanings we give only what the verses say, and anything that connects them to life today is kept separately, in the last box.
On the text: we have corrected a few clear misprints. In the second verse we write samanubhuya and paratmavidya as separate words, in the fifth we restore the long vowel in mokshamarga and read dvija rahasi as two words, and in the eighth we write svarupam with its long vowel.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Look into the rented room of an old teacher who spent years in the classroom and there is not much in it. A cot, a chair, and one shelf of books against the wall. It is easy to call that poverty, but it is also true that what the man in that room needs is there.
The hymn does not send everyone to the forest. But we can notice that it names three wants, wealth, children and reputation. Asking ourselves now and then which of these is running our day is work that can be done at home as well.
