Dharmashasta means the god who is the ruler of dharma, Shasta, the son of Hari and Hara. The first verse introduces dharma and the god who governs it.
The middle verses tell of a yatindra of the Sringeri seat setting out to see Shasta. The last verses are a meditation on Shasta and a description of the dweller of Shabarigiri, ending in a prayer for welfare.

Dharma is the cause of the world’s standing firm, as the end of the Vedas proclaims. The god who is the ruler even of that dharma, I always take refuge in him.
The revered Shankaracharyas, incarnations of Shiva, firmly established on the excellent Shringa mountain a seat for the spread of dharma in all ages. Ascetic masters adorn that seat.
Among those ascetics, rich in learning and austerity, the renowned Abhinava Vidyatirtha, a yogi of great power, set out today to see Shasta. The text reads vidyasutirtha, which we take as Vidyatirtha.
This chief of ascetics, protector of dharma, beheld the ruler of dharma. The meeting of those two is surely fitting for the good of the world.
Even in this age spoilt by the impurity of Kali, Vedic dharma has not been lost there. The cause is none other: it is that Shasta, whose feet all people revere, is present here.
Knowledge is gained by the grace of the father of Shanmukha alone, and liberation by the mercy of him whose mount is Garuda alone. Both knowledge and liberation may be gained without toil by people through the excellent grace of the son of Hari and Hara.
I contemplate in my heart Shasta, the supporter of all the worlds, on whom yogis of controlled minds, endowed with yama, niyama and the rest, always meditate.
He dwells on Shabarigiri, the one worshipful being of all worlds, who brings joy to those who bow and removes the heart-sorrow of the humble. Gods and the sons of Diti alike serve him, and he grants heaven and liberation. May that god, the son of Hari and Hara, always spread welfare.
About this hymn
By the heading in our source, this was composed by Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswami, Jagadguru of Sringeri. We give no date.
Verses 3 and 4 tell of a yogi called Abhinava Vidyatirtha of the Sringeri seat setting out to see Shasta. The text gives no further detail, and we add none.
The text of verse 3 reads vidyasutirtha, and we take it as Vidyatirtha. In verse 5 it is not clear which place the word tatra, there, points to.
Verse 6 links knowledge to the grace of Shiva and liberation to the mercy of Vishnu, and says both come together in Shasta, their son.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Think of a traffic signal at a crowded crossing. Simply by showing green or red it lets hundreds of vehicles pass without striking one another.
The first verse names dharma as the reason the world stands and takes refuge in its ruler. It reminds us that even the small rules of our day likewise make it possible for all of us to live together.
