We bow to Dhanvantari, the primal deity. Gods and demons both worship his lotus feet. The tradition praises him as the one who destroys old age, disease, fear and death in the world. He is the lord who gives many kinds of herbs and medicines.
About this verse
This is a meditation verse on Dhanvantari. The Puranas say Dhanvantari, an avatar of Vishnu, emerged with the pot of nectar at the churning of the ocean. The site has a page on his mantra as well.
We do not know the author. Several places say only that it belongs to the puja tradition. Some printings read jararukbhaya instead of jararugbhaya.
That he destroys disease and death is a belief of the tradition, not a promise of cure. Prayer does not replace medical treatment. When ill, we should take a doctor’s treatment.

Calling him lord of medicines, we also thank medicines and the knowledge behind them. We may remember doctors, nurses and those who make medicines.
In days of illness, saying it may bring calm to the mind. But we must follow the medicine and diet the doctor advises.
