This is an ashtaka in praise of Nataraja, lord of the dance. After eight verses, the ninth speaks of the fruit. The lines are long and similar sounds recur, so that when sung the rhythm of the dance can be heard.
In each line many forms and stories of Shiva follow one another. This page gives the text in Kannada, Devanagari and Roman transliteration, and the meaning of each verse.

Shankara wears an elephant hide as his garment, his virtues are sung by Brahma and Vishnu, and he humbled the pride of Yama. His eye burned Kama, his hand holds a deer, Patanjali the yogi praises him with joined palms, he bears the crescent moon and has a lotus face. O mind, worship the lord of the dance, whose raised left foot is lovely with sweet tinkling anklets.
Among his tall tawny matted locks the Ganga shines. He destroys what is inauspicious, rides the bull, bears Uma as half of his body, breaks his foes and is bowed to by the world of the gods. His throat is dark blue like a bee, and he is the father of Ganesha. O mind, worship him who takes away sin, gives blessing, is lord of the stage, severs the bonds of worldly existence and is the friend of Kubera.
From his hand comes the sound of the damaru, from which tradition says Panini’s sutras arose. He raises his left foot to the rhythm of the mridangam that Madhava plays. He is the lord of the dissolution of all the world, holds fire in his hand, delights with Uma and wears serpents as ornaments. O mind, bow to Sambashiva, whom the exalted praise.
Bow to him who has fierce qualities and is skilled at shattering hostile circles, who bears the crescent moon, who ended Yama and holds the staff, who is adorned by the great tandava in the golden hall, who is friend of the one whose mount is Garuda, who gladdens Arjuna, whose cheeks glow with his earrings, whom bands of sages praise and who upholds the whole cosmic egg.
Worship the Lord whom the sage Vyaghrapada bowed to, whose lotus foot crushes the body of a fierce asura, who dances a dance that charms Indra and the gods, whose virtues the Veda praises, whose long mass of hair humbles the pride of the surging heavenly Ganga, whom Parashurama and Ravana worshipped, who is Uma’s beloved and carries the trident.
Worship him who destroys the power of the asuras, whose body is radiant, who is the enemy of Kama, whose lotus feet Brahmins serve, the imperishable Lord who rests on the bull, whose eyes are the sun and the moon, who is free of distress and who struck out the teeth of the sun. Worship him who destroys the delusion of this perishable worldly round. Some words of this verse are uncertain in meaning, and this is the gist.
Bow to him who bestows prosperity, wears white ash, takes away unrighteousness, is praised in fine songs, gives supreme liberation to the devoted, has equal power, grants good enjoyment, bears auspicious names, is praised by the Veda and the Sama chants and wears the moon. Worship always the lord of the dance, who carries us across the fathomless ocean of becoming.
He carries the trident, tears the net of worldly existence, has fire on his forehead and matted hair, and is white. His blue throat shines, he holds the soft hand of the mountain king’s daughter, the Himalaya’s crest bows to him, and he bears the skull. I come to him without guile. He quelled the Kalakuta poison, is endless, is bowed to by the earth and performs the wondrous lasya dance. O Girisha.
The text says that for one who, in the morning, in the presence of Uma’s lord and with devotion in his mind, sings this excellent song, which charms the heart, is dear to the matchless lord of the dance and is set in verse, all happiness on earth comes, even more than what is hard for the chief of the gods to obtain. There is no further birth, and he reaches the supreme abode of Shambhu.
About this hymn
We take the ashtaka to recall the stories of Nataraja at Chidambaram. The rangapati of verse 2, the hemasabha (golden hall) of verse 4 and Vyaghrapada in verse 5 point that way, but the verses do not name the place.
The source names no author and gives no date, so we say nothing on either.
We give the text as it stands on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The long lines are thick with alliteration, so many words allow two readings. In such places we give the main sense. Some words in verses 4 and 6 are doubtful, for example andakarandajavahasakham in verse 4 and ishvamaksharamukshadhritam in verse 6.
Verse 9 is a phalashruti, and we report what it says as the text says it.

When a dancer steps onto the stage, every step falls in the same rhythm and with the same weight. It is the fruit of practice. The long lines of this hymn to Nataraja likewise move in a single rhythm.
If our day finds a rhythm, the tasks grow lighter. We can arrange our times for rising, eating, working and resting in that way.
