This hymn’s answer to the question of what one’s first thought on waking should be is a plain one: not the form of any deity, but the reality of the Self shining within. The three verses open with three acts, I remember, I worship, I bow. They speak of one and the same reality in three ways, as shining in the heart, as beyond the reach of speech, and as lying past all darkness.
On this page we give Kannada and English meanings for the three verses and for the closing phalashruti. The meanings follow the understanding of the Advaita tradition. Two minutes are enough to recite it, so it fits even into a hurried morning.

In the morning I remember the reality of the Self that shines in the heart. It is being, awareness and happiness, the goal the paramahamsas reach, the fourth state beyond waking, dream and deep sleep, that which ever knows those three. That partless Brahman am I, and not this body made of the five elements.
In the morning I worship that reality which minds and words cannot reach, by whose grace all words shine forth, which the Vedas spoke of by the words neti neti, not this, not this. That itself they call the god of gods, the unborn, the one who never falls away, the first of all.
In the morning I bow to that reality which stands beyond darkness, of the colour of the sun, lacking nothing, the eternal ground, bearing the name Purushottama. Outside its form nothing at all is left over, and in that one this entire world merely appears, as a snake appears on a rope.
Whoever recites in the morning these three holy verses, an ornament of the three worlds, reaches the supreme state.
About this hymn
Tradition gives these three verses to Adi Shankaracharya, and they are printed in the collections of his stotras. There is no further evidence, so the authorship is best held as what tradition says. The subject of the hymn is the remembrance of the Self, and all three verses name the morning as its hour.
The structure is this: three verses in the vasantatilaka metre, then an unnumbered phalashruti in anushtubh. The first verse is very well known on its own, and this site already has a separate page for it under the name Pratahsmarami hridi samsphuradatmatattvam. Here we give all three verses together.
In the meanings we follow the reading of the Advaita tradition. The names Devadeva in the second verse and Purushottama in the third do not point to different deities, but, on this reading, to the same partless Brahman named in the first verse. The image of the snake seen on a rope belongs to the same position: not that the world is nothing, but that it is an appearance upon that one reality.
On the text: some printed versions read nishkalatamaham in the last line of the first verse, and we have chosen nishkalamaham, which fits the metre. There is also another hymn of the same name, on the morning remembrance of various deities, which is not this one.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
The first light at a window, before the household wakes, makes no noise at all. In those few minutes the day’s list has not yet taken hold of the mind. What comes to mind first at that hour is something we can, to a small extent, choose.
That is what this hymn does. What usually takes hold of us on waking is a list of lacks, our post, our health, the work left undone. Recalling for a moment the awareness that lies behind all of them does not shorten that list, but it does remind us that these are not the measures of who we are.
