The Shiva Shadakshara Stotra takes up the six syllables of Om namah Shivaya one by one and bows to each. The six verses follow the order Om, na, ma, shi, va, ya. Each verse describes Shiva in words that begin with that syllable, and closes by saluting the syllable itself.
The six syllables are the five-syllable mantra with Om placed before it. The last verse is the phalashruti, which promises Shiva’s world to those who recite the hymn in his presence. Below we give the text and the meaning of each verse.

Yogis meditate daily on Om joined with the bindu, the nasal dot. It grants what is asked of it, and grants liberation too. To that syllable Om my salutations, again and again.
Sages and gods bow, the hosts of apsaras bow, and men too bow to the lord of the gods. To the syllable na my salutations, again and again.
He is Mahadeva, great of soul, settled in great meditation, the god who takes away even great sins. To the syllable ma my salutations, again and again.
He is auspiciousness itself, peaceful, lord of the world, who shows grace to the worlds. The line is usually read as: Shiva the eternal is the one abode, or it is taken to mean that the single word Shiva is itself eternal. To the syllable shi my salutations, again and again.
To the god whose mount is the bull, whose neck ornament is the serpent Vasuki, and who holds Shakti, Parvati, on his left side. To the syllable va my salutations, again and again.
Wherever he may stand, he is that god, Maheshwara who pervades everything. He is the teacher of all the gods. To the syllable ya my salutations, again and again.
Whoever recites this hymn of the six syllables in Shiva’s presence attains the world of Shiva. There such a person rejoices in Shiva’s own company.
ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn
The hymn names no author. Our source traces the recension we print to the Rudrayamala, a tantra text whose own date is unsettled, so the hymn cannot be dated either. Hymns of this kind, which take the five-syllable mantra apart and salute it syllable by syllable, are many in the Shaiva tradition.
The structure is simple: six verses in anushtubh, then a phalashruti. In the first six, every line of a verse begins with that verse’s own syllable. The closing quarter is always of one shape, naming the syllable and ending namo namah. We translate this refrain in full in verse 1 and briefly thereafter.
Our source, stotranidhi.com, prints two recensions. The first is the Rudrayamala text, six verses with a phalashruti, seven in all. The second is ascribed to Shankaracharya and has ten verses, with bija syllables such as om nam and om mam placed before each verse and three further verses at the close. Most people recite the first form, and that is the one we print here.
A few notes on the text. The bindu of verse 1 is the anusvara dot above the syllable Om, and the verse means meditation on Om together with that nasal. In verse 5 we take vame shaktidharam as holding Shakti, that is Parvati, on his left side. Shivam ekapadam in verse 4 admits two readings, and we indicate both in the meaning.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳು ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. · Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

A doorway often carries a nameplate, and going out or coming in, a hand brushes it in passing without the eyes ever turning to it. This hymn does much the same work. Touching the six syllables one after another, the name becomes familiar to the hand in the ordinary traffic of a day. A hymn this short is also within anyone’s power to learn by heart.
