ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
When shall I dwell on Kailasa, in a mansion of gold and gems, among the ganas, standing before Shambhu with my two hands cupped and folded upon my head, calling out, O all-pervading one, O you who are with Amba, O lord, O supreme Shiva, protect me, and so pass the kalpas of many Brahmas happily, as though they were a moment?
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 24ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 24
From verse 24 there begins in the Shivananda Lahari a series of verses opening with the word kada, when. The note of longing, when will it come, carries several of the verses that follow. The poet who refused a great office in the previous verse here asks for a place among the ganas on Kailasa. The picture of company matters more here than any technical description of liberation.
Kanakamanisaudha is a mansion built of gold and gems. The companions there, however, are not the assembly of the gods but Shiva’s ganas, among whom there is less protocol and more familiarity. The word murdhanjaliputa gives a picture in itself. Tradition holds that cupping the two hands together and holding them above the head is the most respectful of salutations, and sphutaghatita indicates that the joining of the hands is not loose.
Four vocatives come one upon another in the third line. Vibho means you who fill all places. Samba is sa joined to amba and means you who are with the Mother. Svamin and Parama Shiva close the line. All four rest upon the single word pahi, protect me. It is worth noticing that this remains the devotee’s word even after Kailasa has been granted.
The reckoning of time is the last beauty of the verse. The Puranas call a kalpa one day of Brahma. The plural, the kalpas of the creators, goes beyond the life of one Brahma to the time of many. To say that so much time would pass like a moment reverses the stance of the previous verse. There the office of Brahma was not wanted, and here the ages of many Brahmas are a single moment of happiness. Vineshyami is the future formed from the prefix vi and the root ni, and means I shall pass the time. The metre is shikharini.

On a festival evening, when everyone is sitting and talking in the courtyard, we do not notice how the hours went. Waiting alone in the same courtyard, half an hour grows very long.
Time is not measured by the clock alone. It is measured also by whose company we are in. The boon this verse asks for is a simple one, a place to stand before someone, and once that is had the counting of time grows small by itself.
