When the divine nectar of the ocean of Sadashiva’s deeds is drawn up by the water wheel of the intellect and the pot of speech, and led along the channels and side channels of poetry, the paddy of devotion set in the field of the heart comes to its fruiting. Then, O Bhagavan, O lord of the universe, whence any fear of famine for me, your servant?
Context and commentary on verse 40
The verse holds one picture from end to end, the watering of a field. In the villages water was raised from a tank or a well by a wheel with pots tied to it. The water so raised runs down a main channel and from there through small side channels to each bed of the field. If the water comes as it should, the paddy comes into ear.
Each part of the picture has its meaning here. The source of the water is the story of Sadashiva, and that is not a well but an ocean. The wheel that raises it is the intellect. The pot tied to the wheel is speech. The main channel and the side channels are the lines of the poem and the turns within them. The field is the heart. The paddy grown in it is devotion. The coming into ear is fruition.
There is a fine point in the image. Since the source is an ocean it can never run dry, and only the channel can. So the devotee’s work is not to produce the water but to keep the channel clear. Besides this, it should be noticed that this hymn is itself that channel. The verse which says that devotion grows by poetry is doing that very work. The opening verses had the picture of a stream of bliss flowing, and the same water has now reached a field.
The turn in the last line is a happy one. Durbhiksha means, in so many words, a time when even alms are not to be had. In the language of the field, a house with a good harvest has no fear of famine. In the inward sense, a servant of the lord of the universe has no fear of want. There is a certain ease in claiming the word servant for oneself, for when a servant knows who the master is, tomorrow troubles him less.
From verse 36 onward the mind has become one place after another: a pot, a churning rod, a lake, a city, and now a field. It may also be noticed that the verb atanvate from verse 37 returns here. There the churners spread out what they had won, and here the crop spreads out its yield. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with the pause after the twelfth.

Those who know the hour when water comes to the street tap keep their vessels ready in a row beforehand. When it comes there is no scramble, and the houses whose vessels were ready are the ones that fill.
When something good comes we need a vessel to hold it. A line that stayed in the memory, a kind word someone said, a page we wrote down: these are the vessels. In days that feel like a famine, it is these that hold us.
