O crest jewel among the birds that is my mind, give up your useless roaming, and enough of other trees. There is a tree attended by the best of the twice born, who keep to the crests of the branches of the Veda, everlasting, bringing ease, cutting sorrow, lit up with fruits that are the very essence of nectar. In that tree is a nest, the pair of Shankara’s lotus feet. Dwell there for ever.
Context and commentary on verse 45
The whole verse is a single picture. The Veda is a tree, on the tips of its branches sit the twice born, in the tree there is a nest, the nest is the pair of Shankara’s lotus feet, and the bird is my mind. ‘Shakhi’ means the branching one, that is, a tree. Since the divisions of the Veda are themselves called shakhas, the comparison offers itself.
The pun turns on the word ‘dvija’. In the sense of one born twice it belongs to a bird, and also to a brahmin after the sacred thread. ‘Shikha’ means the tip of a branch, and it also means the crown of the Veda, the Upanishad. So a single line gives two pictures at once: birds perched on the treetops, and learned men who have mastered the end of the Veda.
Everything said of the tree works on both sides. Everlasting means a tree that does not shed its leaves, and a Veda without beginning. Giving ease means a tree that gives shade, and a teaching that gives peace of mind. Cutting sorrow means a tree that takes away weariness, and learning that cuts grief. A tree lit with fruits that are the essence of nectar is no tree of this world, and it brings to mind the wish granting tree.
This verse does not address Shiva but the mind. ‘Chetahpakshishikhamane’ is an affectionate turn, coaxing the mind by calling it the crest jewel of birds. In ‘anyairalam’ the word alam takes the instrumental and means enough of, that is, enough of other trees. The work gives the mind many figures: a lake, a fort, a forest, a cave, and now a bird.
The direction has turned here. In verse 42 the mind was handed over as a fort and Shiva was asked to live in it. Here the mind itself is told to go and settle at Shiva’s feet. The next verse calls the same mind a royal swan and tells it to move about in the mansion of the feet of Girija’s lord. The image of the bird does not end with one verse. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today
In a library some people spend the hours shifting from one table to another, carrying their books about. The light is wrong, the neighbour is noisy, the place is not right: the feeling never quite goes.
Sit at one table for two hours and the reading begins by itself. The mind too needs one place to come back to. The time spent looking for a new spot is time saved once we have settled in one.
